Imagine you are running late for work. Everyone on the road seems to be going slow and you hit every stoplight possible. You pull into the parking garage, grab your things, and hurry through the parking lot towards the elevator. As you are several feet away a girl that has called the elevator steps onto the empty elevator and turns around to see you rushing to get on with her. She stares at you as you run to the elevator and the doors shut in your face.... sending her on her way and leaving you to wait for the next one.
How do you feel? This happened to me yesterday and I felt so angry at her. I was so curious as to why she couldn't hold it for just two seconds so that I could get to work faster. Then I realized that last week I had been the same situation (late for work) but I was the girl on the elevator that let the door shut on someone else so that I could make it 30 seconds sooner to work. Now how do you think I felt? Terrible!
It really made me think about how I treat people when I am in a hurry, or even just on any average day. Since yesterday I have tried even harder to pace myself, be patient with others, smile as I pass someone on the street, and PUSH THAT "DOOR OPEN" BUTTON on the elevator. It has made a big difference.

Remember the primary song, "Jesus said love everyone. Treat them kindly too. When your heart is filled with love, others will love you." I hope that song gets stuck in your head and helps us all remember how to be more Christlike!

Makes me think about if I am the rude one on the elevator most of the time or not. Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteThis is random, but I haven't been on an elevator in a long time. :)
ReplyDeleteYou're a good person Lex. We just forget. It's nice to have the reminder though!
